The photograph, taken around 1939 in Osaka (likely at the Asahi News dojo) shows Sokaku Takeda performing Shumoku during the period when he was teaching Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu to the newspaper’s employees.
🔖 Technique Notes
This technique is listed as the Item 15 of the original Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu Hiden Mokuroku. This Item explains the technique as : "Grab the opponent’s hand and twist it up, connect your shoulder to the opponent’s hip and lift him facing upwards.". This technique is known as Katsugi Waza (shouldering technique) in the Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu Horikawa line, but is called Shumoku by Yamamoto Kakuyoshi and Takeda Tokimune. It is unknown, however, whether Sokaku called it that.
