🔖 Technique Notes

In this Koshi Nage variation, Tori extends his arms to lengthen Uke’s body, positions his feet perpendicular to Uke’s in a T-stance, and places his hips beneath Uke’s center of gravity, using them as a pivot over which Uke’s extended body rotates, so that the rotation flows smoothly from the hip rather than being forced by the arms. This Koshi Nage differs from Judō’s hip throws in that Tori maintains two points of contact and rotates Uke over a hip pivot, whereas Judō throws typically use three points of contact and pull Uke tightly to the body, turning them around the hips like a wheel. According to John Driscoll, this particular hip throw isn’t present in the Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu curriculum and could come from Gotō-ha Yagyū Shingan-ryū’s Kinukatsugi.
