🔖 Technique Notes

As Uke attacks with a Chūdan Tsuki, Tori moves to the inside, taking control of Uke’s Jō—one hand near the tip, the other between Uke’s hands. He steps and turns directly in front of Uke, using the hand between Uke’s hands to push the Jō, lifting and unbalancing Uke upward while crossing his arms. Tori then positions himself in a T-angle, roughly 90° to Uke’s feet, and executes a downward cutting motion with the Jō, lowering the tip near Uke’s hand to drive him to roll over his hips. As Uke rolls over Tori’s hips, although Tori isn’t gripping Uke’s arm, Uke’s top arm wraps around Tori’s shoulder, similar to the position in a Seoi Nage.
