Shōmen Uchi – Irimi Nage Variation (Two-Atemi Shihō Nage Entry)

🍃 Advanced 📅 1996 🎓 Tutorial

⛩️ Source

This excerpt is from Nishio Aikido, Volume 3 – Shomenuchi Part 1, from an instructional video series originally produced in 1996–1997 by Aiki News/Aikido Journal and later remastered and published on DVD in 2004.

🔖 Technique Notes

This sequence uses the same entry as Nishio Sensei’s Shihō Nage. As Uke attacks with Shōmen Uchi on Tori’s rear-leg side, Tori first delivers an Atemi to the face before parrying.
To enter and deliver the preemptive strike, Tori adjusts his footwork: if his feet are on the same line, he moves the front foot slightly inwards to position himself better; if the feet are wider apart, he steps the front foot back to align nearly with the rear foot, then takes the same inward step.
After the initial Atemi, as Uke lowers his arm, Tori maintains contact and guides it downward without grabbing, while delivering a second vertical descending Atemi (similar to Shōmen Uchi). As he lowers this second arm, Tori makes outside contact with Uke’s arm and continues the motion, turning the downward action into a circular path that draws Uke’s arm inward. This creates space for Tori to enter to the outside and slip behind Uke.
Once at Uke’s back, Tori performs a Tenkan and finishes with the classic head-wrapping Irimi Nage motion.
