🔖 Technique Notes

As Uke attacks Shōmen Uchi, Tori steps to the outside with his rear leg, bringing it forward to become the lead leg while shifting into a more bladed stance to move off the centerline. At the same time, he delivers an Atemi with the hand on the same side as the advancing leg, striking the side of the back of Uke’s head with Shutō (knife hand) and then placing that hand at Uke’s elbow, while the other hand makes contact with Uke’s attacking arm and follows its downward trajectory.
From there, Tori’s front hand strikes Uke’s chin and remains in contact, while the rear hand moves to the back of Uke’s neck, creating a grip similar to the rear-hand position of a Soto Kaiten Nage entry (the front-hand position would correspond if it had remained at the elbow). In its original form, this configuration leads into a Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu Kubi Hineri variation (with the direction of rotation reversed compared to the original Kubi Hineri), historically used to break Uke’s neck when a helmet is worn. In this more restrained version, the technique instead concludes with a choke.
Tori initiates the rotation by twisting Uke’s head with the hand placed at the back of the neck, while the hand at the chin slides to grip Uke’s lapel—thumb inside and pointing downward, as in a one-handed Nami Jūji Jime—assisting the turn. Once Uke has completed a full rotation and is facing forward again, Tori, now positioned behind him, applies the choke by pulling with the lapel-gripping hand while the other hand maintains control on Uke’s shoulder.
