Sode Dōri – Ikkyō Omote using the Katana Handle

Uke grips Tori’s sleeve (Sode Dōri) to prevent him from drawing his Katana. Tori changes his Hanmi while stepping to the outside, first bringing his lead leg parallel to his rear leg, then slightly advancing the other leg so that his toes are positioned just ahead of Uke’s, restoring proper Hanmi. Simultaneously, he threatens an atemi to Uke’s face with his rear hand and seizes Uke’s wrist with that same hand, which becomes his lead hand after the stance change. As he enters on the inside, Tori lifts Uke’s wrist while controlling the elbow/humerus not with his free hand as in a “normal” Ikkyō, but using the handle of his Bokutō to control Uke’s humerus/elbow, without fully drawing it. Continuing the entry, he lowers Uke’s arm, completing the Ikkyō by pinning the elbow to the ground and applying a goose-neck–style wristlock.
