Kataha Nage Counter with Kneeling Kata Guruma Variation – Yoseikan Budō Hyōri no Kata

🍃 Advanced 📅 2000 🎓 Tutorial

⛩️ Source

This extract comes from the BAB Japan instructional DVD series, released in early 2000, with Volume 2 specifically published on January 26, 2000, and both volumes supervised by Minoru Mochizuki Sensei, who oversaw the filming, choreographed demonstrations, and performed many techniques personally. The technique demonstrated here comes from the Hyōri no Kata, a kata created by Minoru Mochizuki that simulates combat in armor. It is performed in slow-motion and consists entirely of Kaeshi Waza (counter techniques). In this DVD, this kata is demonstrated by Minoru Mochizuki Sensei’s students.

🔖 Technique Notes

Uke controls Tori’s arm in an Ude Garami (Kimura), with one hand securing Tori’s shoulder and the other wrapping around Tori’s arm to grasp the wrist of the hand controlling the shoulder. From this position, Uke applies a spiraling downward turn, rotating his body and directing the lock toward the mat in an attempt to throw Tori down through a descending rotational motion, executing a Kataha Nage.
Tori follows the rotation by stepping in and placing one knee on the ground between Uke’s feet. This entry allows him to free his arm and reverse the configuration so that he is now the one wrapping Uke’s arm. With his knee positioned between Uke’s feet, Tori is already beneath Uke. As he threads his free arm between Uke’s legs and lifts his knee, the upward drive of the knee raises his body, loading Uke onto his shoulders. He then guides Uke to roll over his shoulders as he lowers his other knee to the mat, dropping Uke in a wheeling motion and completing the Kata Guruma.
