🔖 Technique Notes

As Uke raises his Bokutō and begins a Shōmen Uchi, Tori enters to the inside as soon as the blade starts descending, before it accelerates, drawing his Tantō in Gyakute (reverse grip) at the same time, and raises his hands to stop Uke’s cut. He places his rear hand, armed with the Tantō, against Uke’s lead wrist so the blade threatens it, while his other hand controls Uke’s rear hand, thus controlling both arms. Uke stops the cut due to the threat of the blade on his wrist, as continuing would result in a cut, and this sudden stop in his forward motion also unbalances him onto his toes. Tori then uses the hand that was controlling Uke’s rear arm to grasp the Bokutō between Uke’s hands, pivots with a Tenkan at a 45° angle, and lowers the weapon, drawing Uke forward and downward, breaking his posture and forcing his head down. As Uke begins to fall, Tori threatens a downward stab to the face with the Tantō, reinforcing the takedown. Uke falls both from the initial upward unbalancing followed by the downward action and to evade the stab, releasing the Bokutō, which remains in Tori’s possession.
