🔖 Technique Notes

As Uke strikes Shōmen Uchi with his Bokutō, Tori enters deeply to the outside by stepping forward with his rear leg, evading the strike. As he enters, he makes contact with Uke’s lead hand using his own lead hand, and takes the wrist as the cut finishes downward (this hand becomes his rear hand). Continuing the entry, Tori reaches over Uke’s rear shoulder from behind and places the blade of his Tantō, held in Gyakute (reverse grip), against Uke’s throat. He then steps back and down with his rear leg, bringing his rear knee to the ground while pulling down with the hand controlling the throat with the Tantō. Uke is forced to fall backward to avoid being cut. Once Uke is on the ground, Tori releases the pressure on the neck and raises the Tantō overhead, threatening a downward strike, while maintaining control of Uke’s wrist and locking the elbow against his raised knee. The movement and positioning correspond to Katate Dōri Kubishime, with the Tantō blade replacing the forearm and lapel pull normally applied to the neck in the standard unarmed choke variation.
