🔖 Technique Notes

Tori holds Uke in his guard. He secures Uke’s hand with a Kote Gaeshi grip—thumb pressing the area between the little finger and the ring finger, with the remaining fingers on the palm and base of the wrist—and twists it outward as in a Kote Gaeshi, unbalancing Uke to the side. This Kote Gaeshi can be applied with both hands, as in the classic version, or with one hand; however, as Uke is punching, it can be advantageous to keep a free hand available to protect the head from ground-and-pound.
If only the Kote Gaeshi action is applied, Uke may resist by holding his base or attempting to escape forward. To counter this, Tori simultaneously places his leg under Uke’s armpit on the side opposite the twisting hand and lifts, raising Uke’s side, further unbalancing him, limiting his escape, and forcing him to fall onto his side. Tori then follows Uke’s fall to fully reverse the position, ending on top in a full mount.
