🔖 Technique Notes

Uke is on his back, and Tori holds him in a Kesa Gatame from a side position, with an arm wrapped around Uke’s head. However, the control is not fully secured, as Tori does not trap Uke’s near arm under his armpit to immobilize it. From this position, various submissions are possible—for example, a straight arm lock using Tori's lead leg as a fulcrum, or an Ude Garami (Americana) by hooking Uke's arm with the lead leg—but the focus here is the following variation.
If Uke brings his arm close to his head, with the wrist near the head, Tori can capture the wrist with the arm that is already wrapped around Uke’s head. In this configuration, Uke’s elbow points upward, with the head resting against the arm, similar to the final position of Shihō Nage.
Tori then switches the wrist grip to his other hand and pulls Uke’s wrist outward along a line perpendicular to the arm, or slightly backward, while burying his head against Uke’s arm, using it to press on Uke’s elbow. This creates a shoulder lock with torque similar to an Ude Garami (Americana).
