In this sequence, Seki Sensei demonstrates how to close the distance with a katana when facing a longer ōdachi. He deflects Uke’s blade to one side and enters diagonally—entering straight would leave him open to a cut. From this position, he is able to control Uke’s lower-hand wrist or to deliver a thrust to the midsection.
