🔖 Technique Notes
Uke applies Ikkyō Omote from a Men Uchi contact. Utilizing the downward Ikkyō cut, Tori deliberately turns to face Uke while allowing his body to fall backward, seizing the sleeve of the arm with which Uke is controlling Tori’s wrist. Continuing the motion, Tori drops so that his body becomes perpendicular to the original forward-and-downward trajectory of the Ikkyō cut, unbalancing Uke and drawing him forward into the fall.
The mechanics of this sutemi (sacrifice) throw are comparable to Yoko Wakare in Jūdō: in both cases, Tori sacrifices his own balance by dropping sideways to the mat, drawing Uke forward and past him, causing Uke to topple and land across Tori’s body. Unlike classical Yoko Wakare, however, the arm Tori pulls is on the same side as his head when he falls sideways, whereas in traditional Yoko Wakare, Tori pulls the arm on the opposite side of his head.
