Jōdan Gyaku Tsuki – Shihō Nage Ura – Yoseikan Budō Hyōri no Kata

🍃 Advanced 📅 2000 🎓 Tutorial

⛩️ Source

This extract comes from the BAB Japan instructional DVD series, released in early 2000, with Volume 2 specifically published on January 26, 2000, and both volumes supervised by Minoru Mochizuki Sensei, who oversaw the filming, choreographed demonstrations, and performed many techniques personally. The technique demonstrated here comes from the Hyōri no Kata, a kata created by Minoru Mochizuki that simulates combat in armor. It is performed in slow-motion and consists entirely of Kaeshi Waza (counter techniques). In this DVD, this kata is demonstrated by Minoru Mochizuki Sensei’s students.

🔖 Technique Notes

Uke attacks with a Jōdan Gyaku Tsuki—a rear-hand punch to the face, delivered without advancing the leg on the same side (essentially a cross). Tori parries by raising his lead arm—the one on the same side as Uke’s punch—on the inside, making contact with the inside of Uke’s elbow.
Using a circular motion (outward then inward), Tori lowers Uke’s arm, transfers it to his other hand, and secures it at the wrist. As he begins to raise Uke’s arm again, Tori executes a Tenkan pivot, ending side by side with Uke. Continuing to lift the arm, once Uke’s hand reaches over Tori’s head, Tori performs an Enka pivot, unbalancing Uke.
In this way, Tori establishes the classic Shihō Nage Ura set-up and could complete the throw by cutting with Uke’s arm.
