🔖 Technique Notes

From an over-the-back collar grip (Eri Dori) combined with control of Uke’s near sleeve, Tori initiates the same jumping entry used for Kani Basami. However, instead of scissoring both legs around Uke’s thigh, the instep leg assumes the same position as in Podsad, inserting deeply against and underneath Uke’s far leg rather than over it as in Kani Basami.
As Tori falls, he straightens the inserted leg as in Podsad to create lift and disruption, but simultaneously captures the heel of Uke’s near leg. He lands shoulder-first and continues the motion into a roll, following the mechanics of the rolling knee bar. Unlike the standard rolling knee bar, however, Tori does not roll forward in front of Uke; instead, he rolls laterally along the line of Uke’s feet.
Once on the ground, Tori can immediately apply the knee bar while maintaining the over-the-back grip, or release it to transition into a classic two-hand-controlled knee bar. Unlike the traditional rolling knee bar, this variation can also be executed as Uke is moving or leaning backward, rather than requiring full forward momentum.
