🔖 Technique Notes

From a Kesa Gatame control, Tori’s right arm is over Uke’s trapped arm, which is held under his armpit. He arches backward to pass his arm under Uke’s arm, then grips his own wrist while maintaining control of Uke’s head. Using his hips again and arching backward, Tori applies a cervical compression to Uke’s neck. Unlike the variation shown in Mikinosuke Kawaishi’s 1951 Ma Méthode de Judo (My Method of Judo), Uke’s head is not turned to the side, so the crank demonstrated here is purely a compression, not a lateral extension as in the book.
