This technique is one of the five kata that make up the Omote set (the ryū’s fundamental first set). In this kata, Uke seizes the Tori’s clothing at the neck and delivers an overhead strike with the right hand, Tori blocks with the left arm, takes Uke’s left wrist and pivots it downward, then Tori reaches over with the right hand to grab Uke’s collar, drives a raised knuckle into the attacker’s throat, sinks his weight to collapse the attacker’s extended arm, steps forward to unbalance him, rotates under the right arm drawing the elbow to the chest so the attacker is snug on the hip, and finally throws Uke over the hip by pulling with the right hand and sweeping the attacker’s left leg with the left (a clear technical template for a hip throw). According to John Driscoll, this technique could be the origin of Morihei Ueshiba’s koshi nage, as Ueshiba studied Goto-ha Yagyū Shingan-ryū taijutsu for roughly four years.
