🔖 Technique Notes

Uke places Tori’s wrist in a Kote Gaeshi position, gripping his hand with both hands and twisting it outward. As Uke executes the cut, Tori drops so that his body becomes perpendicular to the trajectory of the Kote Gaeshi, and during the fall, he threads his free arm between Uke’s arms to hook Uke’s nearest elbow. This action unbalances Uke and pulls him forward into the fall.
The mechanics of this sutemi (sacrifice) throw are comparable to Yoko Wakare in Jūdō: in both cases, Tori sacrifices his own balance by dropping sideways to the mat, drawing Uke forward and past him, causing Uke to topple and land across Tori’s body. Unlike classical Yoko Wakare, however, the arm Tori pulls is on the same side as his head when he falls sideways, whereas in traditional Yoko Wakare, Tori pulls the arm on the opposite side of his head.
