Kote gaeshi – Kazuo Chiba Direct Backward Absorption Variation
⛩️ Source
This excerpt is taken from a seminar conducted by Kazuo Chiba at the Connecticut Aikikai in New Haven on March 27–28, 1993.
🔖 Technique Notes
In this variation, Tori receives the shōmen-uchi by raising one hand in a shōmen-like motion to protect himself, while simultaneously stepping straight backward, drawing the front foot back so it aligns with the rear leg. At the same time, he seizes Uke’s wrist with the other hand. Without breaking the movement, Tori continues retreating by stepping back with the rear leg, simultaneously applying the kote-gaeshi rotation to Uke’s wrist.
It is important to note that in this variation the wrist is folded in line with the natural extension of the joint, not to the side.
