Leg Scissors Head Throw – Noma Dojo (1936)

This image comes from a collection of over 1,000 photographs of Morihei Ueshiba taken at the Noma Dojo, the private dojo of publishing magnate Seiji Noma. The photographs were captured with an expensive Leica camera by Noma’s son, Hisashi Noma, who was among the leading Kendō champions of his time. In every image, Ueshiba Sensei’s uke is Shigemi Yonekawa.
🔖 Technique Notes
This technique appears to be a scissor head throw (Kubi Nage) variation. Contrary to more common scissor head throws, both legs are not placed symmetrically on either side of the head. Instead, the left foot is positioned to the side of the head, while the right leg passes underneath the face, creating an asymmetrical scissoring structure.
The action of the left foot may resemble a Tomoe Nage–like motion, possibly contributing to forward rotation and lift, with the contact point being at the face rather than the abdomen or hip as in Tomoe Nage.
