🔖 Technique Notes
Tori establishes an over-the-back grip while controlling Uke’s near wrist. He then waits for Uke to advance, or draws him forward and downward. The rolling kneebar cannot be performed if Uke retreats, as it relies entirely on Uke’s forward momentum and weight commitment onto the lead leg. As soon as Uke steps in and loads the leg, Tori pulls down and under, rolling low onto the far shoulder (never the head or elbows) and driving the shoulders deep between Uke’s legs. The inside leg threads between Uke’s legs, positioned on the thigh in the same orientation as in Uchi Mata, while the outside leg stays outside to form the trap. In this variation, Tori does not collect the far heel, keeping the back collar grip throughout the roll, which maintains control and sets up the leg for the subsequent knee bar.
