🔖 Technique Notes

Tori is on his back, holding Uke in a closed guard. He establishes a cross sleeve grip (Sode Dōri) with one hand and secures a firm grip on the back of Uke’s triceps with the other, holding along the sleeve seam near the upper arm. Tori pivots his hips outward, bringing the outside knee onto Uke’s shoulder while placing the other foot on the hip. By pulling forward with his grips and driving his knee in, lifting the leg, Tori draws Uke’s hip forward, shifting his weight onto one knee and breaking his balance.
If Uke’s base is relatively narrow or aligned, Tori completes the scissor sweep by maintaining the pull on the controlled arm while pushing up across Uke’s torso with the top leg—positioned high, nearly under Uke’s armpit—and simultaneously extending the lower leg (the one that was on the hip) to cut through Uke’s base, forcing him to fall onto his side. Tori then follows Uke’s fall to fully reverse the position, ending on top in a full mount.
