🔖 Technique Notes
Tani Otoshi, or "valley drop," is a Jūdō counter and sacrifice throw in which Tori off-balances the Uke backward and slightly to the side, then drops one leg behind Uke’s legs while leaning slightly backward. Tori uses the hands to pull Uke backward over the extended leg, creating a fulcrum with their own body and leg, while keeping the weight low and grounded. The key is to redirect Uke’s backward momentum rather than lift, letting them fall over the blocking leg like sliding into a “valley.”
