🔖 Technique Notes

Tori grabs Uke’s wrist in Ai Hanmi Katate Dōri and raises the arm as in a Shiho Nage or Ude Kime Nage entry. When the arm is high enough, he places it onto his shoulder, locking the elbow against it, and slightly leans forward while lowering Uke’s wrist to fully extend the arm and secure the elbow lock.
From this position, Tori has two options. He can place his hips across Uke’s body to prevent him from stepping forward and relieving the pressure on the elbow. Alternatively, he can remain in place and allow Uke to step forward to escape the lock; maintaining contact with the arm through his shoulder, Tori then drives his shoulder forward and downward, unbalancing or throwing Uke.
