🔖 Technique Notes
According to Joe Thambu Sensei, the principle behind Kokyū Nage is to carry Uke’s shoulder beyond the point where his foot can step to support it — effectively moving the shoulder outside its base, or polygon, of support.
In this variation, as Uke attacks with Yokomen Uchi, Tori seizes the arm without stopping the strike and follows the trajectory of the attack to drive Uke forward into imbalance. Simultaneously, Tori drops to one knee and extends his leg across Uke’s path, preventing him from stepping to recover his balance.
The resulting Kokyū Nage closely resembles a drop Tai Otoshi in mechanics.
