🔖 Technique Notes

As Uke strikes Jōdan Tsuki, Tori enters to the outside, deflecting the punch with his lead hand while the rear hand makes contact with the back of Uke’s neck, as in a classical Soto Kaiten entry. This contact can also function as an Atemi, delivered with Shutō (knife hand).
Tori then initiates Uke’s rotation by continuing the deflection of the striking arm downward and outward in a circular motion, forcing Uke’s head to drop. This opening allows Tori to deliver a knee strike to Uke’s face. As the turning motion continues, Tori slips to Uke’s back with a small Tenkan pivot. Unbalanced, Uke posts on the mat with his free hand.
Remaining upright, Tori immediately pins Uke by stepping on the posted hand with his lead foot and applying a Daitō-ryū Aikijūjutsu–style control. He grips Uke’s hand by the fingers and extends them backward; this extension naturally lifts the wrist and straightens the arm, and continued pressure on the fingers increases tension through the wrist and elbow, completing the pin.
