🔖 Technique Notes

Tori is on his back, holding Uke in a closed guard. He establishes a double sleeve grip (Ryō Sode Dōri). Tori pivots his hips outward, bringing the outside knee horizontally across Uke’s abdomen while placing the other foot on the hip, and pulls with both grips to unbalance Uke forward and extend his arms. He then raises the top leg high, nearly under Uke’s armpit.
From this scissor sweep setup—where the top leg would normally push across the torso—Tori instead switches direction, turning his hips to the opposite side to transition from the guard position to a position perpendicular to Uke. As he does so, he places the foot that was under Uke’s armpit onto Uke’s back. Tori then brings his other leg (previously on the hip) around and over Uke’s head, locking his legs together with both of Uke’s arms trapped between them.
Tori releases the sleeve of Uke’s upper arm to control the lower arm with both hands, with Uke’s thumb pointing upward. With his hips positioned under Uke’s elbow, he lifts his hips to complete the armbar (Jūji Gatame).
