Double-Leg Drop Kick – Carlos Gracie Sr Variation
⛩️ Source
The photo in question is a training shot of Carlos Gracie Sr. (executing the technique) on his younger brother Hélio Gracie. Photographer José Medeiros took this series of shots during Gracie family training. this picture was first published in the Brazilian magazine O Cruzeiro on January 14, 1950, in an article “Hélio Gracie desafia Ezzard Charles” by Luciano Carneiro (with photos by Medeiros).
🔖 Technique Notes
In this drop kick, tori is fully airborne with both legs extended forward in parallel, projecting force through the soles while the torso remains relatively upright and the arms extend laterally for balance. Contrary to a flying side-kick, where a single leg chambers and then extends along a linear path with the hips sharply turned over to maximize penetration and alignment through the heel, this technique lacks a distinct chamber phase and hip isolation, distributing impact across both legs and relying more on forward momentum.
