🔖 Technique Notes

This image appears to depict a classic execution of Hane Goshi (springing hip throw), where Tori (the thrower) has already broken Uke’s balance forward and slightly to the front corner (mae-sumi direction) and is rotating in tightly to load Uke onto the hip. Tori’s hips are positioned across Uke’s center of gravity, and the upper body control (via the sleeve and lapel grips) keeps Uke closely wrapped over the hip line. Crucially, rather than performing a broad sweeping or reaping motion, Tori’s attacking leg is clearly lifting upward against the inner thigh of Uke’s leg, creating a springing action that actively elevates Uke’s lower body. This upward lift contributes significantly to the throw, causing Uke’s feet to leave the ground and their body to rise and rotate over Tori’s hip. The emphasis on this lifting, spring-like motion—combined with the hip acting as the fulcrum—highlights the defining characteristic of Hane Goshi, distinguishing it from techniques like Harai Goshi, where the action is more of a sweeping reap than a vertical lift.
