🔖 Technique Notes
Uke applies Ikkyō Omote from a Men Uchi contact. To counter the technique effectively, it is essential that Tori’s wrist, elbow, and shoulder remain relaxed—particularly the shoulder. If any of these joints are stiff, the counter will fail. Since Ikkyō seeks to control the shoulder by immobilizing the elbow, maintaining a relaxed shoulder can allow Tori to neutralize the technique when it is imperfectly applied.
Tori relaxes his shoulder and, as Uke executes the Ikkyō cut, advances his rear leg and rotates his body with an Enka pivot, abandoning his hand to Uke so that it remains on his own back, effectively neutralizing the technique. Once facing Uke, Tori can then strike the neck or side of the face with a Shutō (knife hand).
Uke lowers his head to evade the strike, but Tori maintains contact, keeping his hand controlling the back of Uke’s neck. From this position, Tori delivers a knee strike to Uke’s midsection. He then turns his body, pressing Uke’s head downward while driving into Uke’s lower body with his own, projecting him in a variation of Kaiten Nage Ura.
