🔖 Technique Notes

Uke and Tori meet in a Men Uchi contact. Tori steps to the outside with his lead foot and advances, lowering his arm and allowing Uke to seize the wrist and begin moving behind him to establish Ushiro Ryōte Dōri. However, before Uke can secure the second arm, Tori advances that arm forward as he steps, placing it out of reach. He then raises his now rear arm (the one being held) and passes under it.
This movement draws Uke forward, causing him to step in front of Tori as he continues reaching for control, while Tori passes under his own arm and lets Uke move ahead of him. Tori then takes control of Uke’s neck with his free hand by gripping the collar from behind (Ushiro Eri Dōri), and retreats his rear leg at nearly a 90° angle to his original line, pivoting to face the opposite direction. This brings Uke’s head with him and begins to lower it.
Once Uke’s head is aligned with Tori’s centerline, Tori drops his body into a horse stance (Shikō Dachi) and extends the arm controlling the neck downward, driving Uke’s head toward the ground—bringing the forehead close to the mat and breaking his posture.
Tori then rises, allowing Uke to come back up, and uses this upward momentum to change hanmi: he retreats his lead leg on the same line as his rear leg, then enters with his rear leg, placing it just behind Uke’s nearest leg. As he enters, he wraps his free arm around Uke’s head and cuts downward, completing a classic head-wrapping Irimi Nage.
