🔖 Technique Notes

Uke grabs Tori’s wrist in an Ai Hanmi Katate Dōri. As the grab occurs, Tori steps slightly to the outside line and executes an Enka pivot. Using this motion, he applies the classical Ai Hanmi Katate Dōri Nikkyō Ura (called Shutō Zume in Daitō-Ryū Aikijūjutsu), placing his free hand on Uke’s fingers to prevent him from releasing the grip while the other hand presses on the wrist joint to create the Nikkyō lock (compression and rotation of the wrist).
Using the same hand that was controlling Uke’s fingers to prevent him from letting go, Tori grabs the tips of Uke’s fingers—a grip known as Yubi Dōri—taking advantage of the weak grip caused by the Nikkyō wrist lock. With the fingers pointing downward, he then overextends them in a circular motion (forward and downward, then backward), causing Uke to roll in response to the overextension.
