🔖 Technique Notes

This picture shows the first technique from a set of twelve basic kumite (paired practice) of Motobu Chōki.

This is the translation of the manual indications :
"One type of posture used when facing an opponent. (figure 5)
When the opponent thrusts toward my face with his left fist, I receive and deflect the opponent’s left arm deeply with my right hand, and at the same time restrain the opponent’s right fist with my left hand (figure 6).
While deflecting the opponent’s left fist with my right hand,
I simultaneously drive my right elbow into the opponent’s left flank. (figure 7)."

In modern karate terminology, the elbow strike performed here would be classified as yoko empi uchi (horizontal elbow strike).
