🔖 Technique Notes
As Uke grabs both of Tori’s shoulders in Mae Ryō Kata Dōri, Tori steps forward on the centerline, raising his lead hand (on the same side as the stepping foot) to place his palm under Uke’s chin in an Irimi Nage variation (Irimi Nage Palm-on-Chin Variation). This extends Uke’s head backward and thus lifts and drives Uke backward, unbalancing him onto his toes as he arches to remain standing. To complete the takedown, Tori slightly withdraws the lead foot and then steps more deeply to the outside with it. In the same movement, he grabs the sleeve of Uke’s outside arm with his free hand and delivers a downward elbow strike with the lead arm (the one that was on Uke’s chin) to Uke’s throat, dropping his bodyweight into the strike as he steps, which brings Uke down.
